This cake is so good! I have been a big fan of dulce de leche for years and I have used in all kinds of desserts from macaroons to dessert dips to just warming up and dipping churros into. For this recipe, I wanted to make a cake that really embraced that flavor in each bite that would also be a good balance of sweet and salty. It turned out amazing, each bite has a tender crumb and packed with flavor!

Dulce de Leche Cake - A sweet spin on a sheet cake made with dulce de leche (caramelized milk) and topped with a decadent dulce de leche buttercream frosting.

Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup dulce de leche
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sour cream

For the Frosting

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup dulce de leche
  • 3-4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk (optional)

Instructions

For the Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and line a 9"x13" pan with parchment. Set aside.
  2. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat together the butter, sugar, brown sugar, and dulce de leche until smooth and creamy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time along with the vanilla. Beat until combined.
  4. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Slowly add it to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Stir in sour cream.
  6. Transfer cake batter to the prepared pan, it will be very thick.
  7. Spread it evenly into the pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow to cool completely.

For the Frosting

  1. In a large bowl, beat the butter and dulce de leche until smooth.
  2. Stir in the vanilla and add the powdered sugar until desired consistency is reached. If the frosting is too thick, add 1-2 tablespoons of milk to thin it out.
  3. Spread the frosting over the cooled cake and drizzle with additional dulce de leche (if desired).
  4. Slice and serve.
