Old Fashioned Glazed Donuts

Old Fashioned Glazed Donuts

I have a HUGE sweet tooth and one of my favorite things to do enjoy old fashioned glazed donuts.  Whether they are from a cider mill, local donut shop, or even Tim Hortons, I love to eat them.  After all these years of being a donut fanatic, I decided that I just had to finally try making them at home.  Now I had previously made baked donuts before (such as my apple cider baked donuts) but classic fried donuts were a very different ball game because they are closer to making a bread than a cake.

Now if you haven’t made old fashioned donuts before, don’t worry.  This is a super easy recipe for beginners with some photos in the instructions.  These donuts are great to make for brunch of the weekends or as a fun dessert.  I suggest eating them the same day you make them for optimal freshness but hey, they are still great the next day!

Common Questions About Making Old Fashioned Glazed Donuts

What are old fashioned glazed donuts?

An old fashioned donut is a yeasted donut made with common cake ingredients such as flour, sugar, eggs, buttermilk or sour cream, and a leavening ingredient including yeast.

Can I make these donuts flavored?

Yes! If you want to flavor them, I suggest doing so through the icing.

Do I have to deep fry them?

Yes, the way that they are cooked is by deep frying them.  if you try baking them, they will not come out correctly.  Air frying them might work but having not personally tried it yet, I cannot fully attest.

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 45 minutes

Ingredients

Donuts

  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 tablespoons butter (melted)
  • 2/3 cup buttermilk

Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

For the Donuts

  1. In a small mixing bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  2. Add the sugar and eggs to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Beat on medium-high speed until the mixture is smooth and pale yellow.
  3. Next, add the melted butter and buttermilk and mix until just combined.
  4. Switch to the dough hook attachment and add the dry ingredients to the bowl. Mix on low speed until a smooth dough forms - about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly greased bow and place in the fridge to chill for at least one hour.
  6. After the dough has chilled, heat 3-4 inches of neutral oil in a large dutch oven and bring temperature to 375 degrees F.
  7. While bringing up the oil temperature, roll out the dough to 1/2" thickness on a well-floured surface.
  8. Using a 2 1/2" floured round cutter, cut out the donuts. Score the top of the donuts with a sharp knife.
  9. Carefully place a few donuts at a time into the oil and fry until golden brown - about 2 minutes per side. Make sure not to crowd the pan too much.
  10. Carefully remove the donuts from the oil and place them on a paper towel to remove excess oil, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool slightly.

For the Glaze

  1. Whisk together all of the ingredients together in a medium-sized bowl.
  2. Dip the donuts fully into the glaze one by one and enjoy. Allow the glaze to fully set before storing - about 30 minutes.
  3. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, but the are best the day they are prepared.

Notes

* Buttermilk can be replaced with regular milk if you don't have any on hand.

* Make sure to glaze donuts while they are still warm - warm donuts will melt the glaze and it will cover the donuts evenly.
