Common Questions About Making a No Bake Chocolate Pie

What is a no bake chocolate pie?

A chocolate pie pie is a no bake pie made with chocolate graham cracker crust, a chocolate pudding filling, whipped topping, and chocolate curls.

What kind of chocolate pudding should I use?

You can use whatever your favorite chocolate instant pudding is whether it is regular, dark, or even white chocolate. Alternatively, you could substitute in homemade chocolate pudding for the instant mix and milk in the recipe.

Can I make a homemade crust?

Yes, if you are making your own crust, use a graham cracker crust, chocolate graham cracker crust, or an oreo crust recipe.  Don’t use a buttered pie crust recipe, it will taste weird.

Do I need to refrigerate chocolate pies?

Yes, because there is dairy in the recipe, the pie needs to be refrigerated after it is made.

What kind of whipped topping should I use?

Either cool whip or homemade whipped cream.

Recipe Notes

  • You can use a pre-made chocolate crust instead of the homemade one.

  • Using beaters or a stand mixer when you mix the pudding and milk in step three will get it smooth, but it’s not totally necessary.
  • It is important to work fairly quickly when adding the whipped cream to the pudding and milk mixture because the longer it sits, the thicker it gets. This makes it harder to mix in. Whipping the cream before mixing the pudding and milk is one way to make sure you get it in fast.
  • I made chocolate shavings by using a box grater and a chocolate bar but you can buy pre-made chocolate curls or shaved chocolate.
  • You can also substitute mini chocolate chips or chocolate sprinkles for the chocolate shavings.
  • I chose not to sweeten the whipped cream on top because the rest of the pie was sweet but you can always add in 3 tablespoons of powdered sugar when whipping the cream.

What kind of toppings can I put on my chocolate pie?

Some of my favorite toppings to put on a chocolate pie are chocolate chips or shaved chocolate curls.  Additional some other topping are –
