Apple Cinnamon Waffles – The perfect fall breakfast recipe! Homemade waffles made with applesauce and cinnamon and topped with an easy apple compote!

Apple Cinnamon Waffles

Apple Cinnamon Waffles

It’s time to pull out those waffle irons that are hanging out in the back of your cabinet gathering dust! I know, we all have that waffle iron that we got thinking we were going to make waffles every weekend… and then we didn’t. After you try these apple cinnamon waffles, that waffle iron will definitely become a staple in your kitchen because they were so good!

Now the first thing to know about this recipe is the base of the waffles uses applesauce rather than chunks of apple because this allows the waffles to cook more evenly.  The applesauce helps give the waffles the apple flavor and then we add the apple texture back in with the apple compote on top.  It’s super easy to make and totally delicious! If you don’t want to make the compote, an apple butter or even canned apple pie filling would work instead!

Ingredients Notes

  • Make sure to measure your flour using the spoon and level technique.  Adding too much flour can result in dense waffles.
  • Brown sugar adds a bit of sweetness to the waffles and compote.  Feel free to substitute granulated sugar if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Baking powder helps our waffles rise and stay soft and fluffy.
  • Cinnamon adds a bit of warmth and spice, helping enhance the flavor of the apple.
  • The egg binds the waffle batter together.
  • Milk is our main wet ingredient – feel free to swap dairy-free milk if you prefer.
  • Applesauce adds extra moisture and apple flavor to the waffles.
  • Butter adds extra richness to the waffle batter and helps form a caramel in the compote.
